Don't Tax My Credit Union - Action steps for credit unions
While the credit union tax status remains secure following the Ways & Means Committee release of the reconciliation bill, we're not at the finish line yet. It is important we show our appreciation and thank Congress for not including credit union taxation in the bill, and at the same time urge Congress to keep it out as it moves through the House and Senate. Check out the resources below for actions you can take now. If you have any questions, email us at advocacy@americascreditunions.org.

ACTION STEPS - With lawmakers
- Continue grassroots Don’t Tax My Credit Union (DTMCU) efforts: Please take a moment to thank your lawmakers for keeping credit unions top of mind with the Ways and Means Committee. We must also urge them to keep the reconciliation bill language clean – and the credit union tax status secure – as they vote it out of the House and Senate.
- Meet with lawmakers and continue bringing your credit union stories of people helping people. Focus on the credit union difference and credit union tax status in those meetings. While other issues may come up, make sure lawmakers know that protecting the credit union tax status is your top priority and ask that they continue to stand with us.
ACTION STEPS - With your credit union
- Encourage your staff to contact their lawmakers too: Effective grassroots advocacy is about activating as many people as possible to take action. Share with your staff today to help maximize our reach.
- Support the National Advocacy Fund (NAF): Showcasing the credit union difference during the reconciliation bill process is critical. NAF allows us to do that through paid digital advertising that targets key stakeholders. You can see some of the DTMCU digital messaging already in circulation, along with the DTMCU website.
ACTION STEPS - With social media and outreach
- Empower members to record their stories with our social media toolkit.
- Use social media to amplify the #DontTaxMyCreditUnion message. We have a social media toolkit in the Member Activation Program (MAP) resource center (password protected) with graphics and messaging ready to go.
